University Startup World Cup has been running for five years. Its goal is to present new university companies from around the world that are having an impact. That is why they made sure to incorporate the SDGs into the base of their program.
They have configured the application process differently this year. They have designed an online program that teaches basic Nordic-style methods to ensure that all its participants have the same opportunities. The program starts from May to July, where the new companies will work in their own free time, and will present mini tasks that will be added to their request for the round of judges.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN will be the backbone of this year’s USWC.
The implications of not complying with the SDGs have consequences in the real world that will affect the lives of all. Young people, in particular, will suffer more if the SDGs are not met, simply because of the reality of longevity. Failure to comply with the SDGs is a problem, so it is essential to involve and motivate young people to participate in the achievement of the SDGs, especially given the high proportion of youth populations around the world, such as in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
The organization behind the USWC is called Venture Cup. Venture Cup Denmark is an association of all Danish universities (except RUC). They work to promote and show entrepreneurship among college students and help bridge the gap between the academic world and the business community. A pioneer in the field, Venture Cup was founded in 2000 as one of the first business organizations in the country.
Each year they organize two national startup competitions, a World Cup of University Startups with teams from around the world and the largest Startup Mentors program in Scandinavia for university students promoted by the Hempel Foundation. At the beginning of 2018, they launched the Nordic HealthTech Talents program with the support of the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Deadline is July 21, 2019
