Students who are interested in working in public policy jobs in communications, research, or outreach are ideal applicants for this fellowship. MA Fellows can pursue skills that will prepare them for a career in public policy, including strategic communications, outreach, policy research, and project management. All MA fellows are required to pursue an MA in economics from the George Mason University, and they are encouraged to take optional courses that further sharpen their expertise in communicating and conducting economic analysis of public policy issues.
Furthermore, the fellows of Mercatus Center’s Fellowship in the USA will attend reading groups and different career development workshops. The fellows are also subjected to spend at least 20 hours per week working with Mercatus staff and scholars. Fellows will join an international network of Mercatus students, scholars, and alumni conducting, participating, and engaging with cutting-edge and top research in modern political economy. MA Fellows will also get the opportunity to work as research assistants and co-authors with Mercatus scholars on some relevant policy areas such as regulations, financial markets, federal fiscal policy, monetary policy, state and local policy, trade and immigration, technology policy, healthcare and the study of American capitalism.
Fellows will work with already established scholars networks that have the academic credentials as well as professional experience that make them one of the leading experts on public policy issues. By working with the scholars, MA fellows will learn how to research complicated policy issues and communicate good economic analysis through different academic articles, congressional testimony, policy publications, opinion pieces, and other blog posts. Furthermore, Mercatus Center’s MA Fellowship program fellows will also have the chance to work with Mercatus staff and scholars to learn how to promote, distribute, and translate economic analysis through different written products, media, video production, and podcasts. Fellows will become policy analysts and researchers at various federal and state agencies, in Congressional staff positions, at different think tanks, and other academic research centers.
