The FoodTech Challenge for Startups 2022 is now open for applications. The FoodTech Challenge aims to identify the next generation of technological breakthroughs that have the potential to alter food and traditional agriculture methods in a long-term and cost-effective manner.

The competition calls out early-stage startups from international university-based research teams to small entrepreneurs and small businesses. The challenge is looking for innovations in two key food production areas to address food availability and abundance and explore nutrient-rich alternatives, ‘next gen’ and ‘food loss and food waste,’ ensuring sustainability across the food supply chain and the planet in a broad sense.

    Here are the eligibility criteria to enter FoodTech Challenge for startups:

    • The startup competition is open to all participants over the age of 18.
    • They are looking for early-stage agrifood tech startups in food loss/waste and food production.
    • Address the ‘Food Production’ and ‘Food Loss and Waste’ value chain areas.
    • The startup must not have yet completed a series-A investment round.
    • They also have a functional minimum viable product.
    • Furthermore, have been in business for less than five years.
    • Finally, limit their workforce to no more than 25 people.

    • Cash rewards, startup acceleration, incentive programs, and R&D support make up a US $2 million total prize pool.
    • The FoodTech Challenge will cover lodging and transportation costs for a limited number of finalists visiting the UAE (subject to travel restrictions).

    Application evaluation criteria:

    • Technology: Applications must include value-added technology with the potential to alter the agriculture and food industries through innovative solutions.
    • Environmental Sustainability: Applications must show efficient use of natural resources and contribute to the food and agricultural environment sustainability.
    • Relevance to the UAE: Applications must address a food security issue relevant to the UAE, and solutions must be deployable in the country.
    • Commercial viability: Applications must have a defined and sizable target market and a route to long-term financial viability.

    Application Process:

    • Participants must create an account on the competition submission platform to participate in the FoodTech Challenge.
    • Log in to view the application form after creating an account and verifying your email address.
    • Participants need to supply details about their startup and suggested solution, short responses to various questions, an entire business case with more company details, and a demo film of the solution.
    • Suppose they want to receive feedback before the regular submission date. In that case, participants can choose the early submission option, which requires submitting the application form and an executive summary by the early submission deadline.
    • Must submit their application once they have given all of the essential information.

    • Submissions via email will NOT be accepted.
    • In addition, the photo captions must be in English or French Language.
    • Video Submission:
    1. It must be an original video.
    2. It must be one minute long.
    3. Must be in English or French Language, without any background noise or music.
    4. The camera must be in a fixed position to avoid a shaky video.
    5. The videos must not be altered beyond standard optimization.
    6. Re-check your audio quality before submission.
    • Photo Submission:
    1. A maximum of 3 pictures can be submitted, could be presented as a montage as well.
    2. Mention key messages in your submission for details in writing.
    3. Photos must not be altered beyond standard optimization.
    4. Pictures must be your original content and not be picked from somewhere; otherwise, the participants will be disqualified.
