Okayama City established the ESD Okayama Award in 2015. The ESD Okayama Award strives to promote the SDGs and gain traction. The world has become increasingly linked and borderless in recent years, and what happens in one location now impacts other parts of the globe. The myriad difficulties we confront, such as poverty, climate change, and biodiversity loss, cannot be solved independently.

The 17 global goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were designed to execute in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which was accepted by world leaders in September 2015 at the United Nations Summit to promote action to build sustainable societies around the world.
Furthermore, the new international framework for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), dubbed “ESD for 2030,” has been in effect since January 2020. Promoting ESD education is now seen as essential for ensuring educational quality and achieving all of the objectives.
