Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2019-20 Study in Switzerland

The Swiss Government, through the Federal Commission, offers scholarships of excellence for foreign academics and artists in Switzerland. Scholarships are available for doctoral, postdoctoral, research and fine arts programs at one of the public universities or recognized institutions.

The excellence of the Swiss government The scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or a doctorate. and in foreign artists with a bachelor’s degree.

Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards grants of governmental excellence to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and more than 180 countries. The recipients are selected by the awarding agency, the Federal Commission for Foreign Student Programs (FCS).

Applicants from outside the country of origin often must meet specific English / other language requirements in order to study there.

    Eligibility Criteria :

    Ph.D. in Philosophy. Criteria

    • Master or equivalent university degree recognized by the Swiss university. The applicant must have reached this grade before the start of the program next September. As proof, the title must be submitted to the Federal Commission for applications before the start of the program.
    • Date of birth of the applicant after December 31, 1983.
    • Applicants who have been in Switzerland for more than a year at the beginning of the program in September are not eligible.

    Post Doctorate
    It cannot have been more than five years between the award of the Ph.D. and the application deadline.
    Applicants who are in Switzerland for more than one year at the beginning of the program in September are not eligible.
    Applicants must provide a letter (or email) from a professor at the Swiss host institution stating that they are willing and entitled to supervise the postdoctoral research. Without such confirmation, the request will be rejected.
    Applicants must have a research proposal that includes a time frame (this is the centerpiece of the application. The applicant must devote all the required attention).
    Applicants must have mastery of the language skills necessary for postdoctoral research.
    Applicants who have already benefited from a Swiss government excellence scholarship are not eligible to apply for a second scholarship.

    Research criteria

    Bachelor or equivalent.
    Applicants must be born after December 31, 1983.
    Applicants must begin their scholarship no later than three years after graduating with their Bachelor’s degree.
    Applicants who have been in Switzerland for more than a year at the beginning of the program in September are not eligible.
    Applicants must have mastery of the language skills necessary for the master’s program.
    Applicants who have already benefited from a Swiss government excellence scholarship are not eligible to apply for a second scholarship.
    Scholars are expected to move to Switzerland during their grant period.

    Financial aid positions will include:

    Phd. in Philosophy. Scholarships

    • The aid amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 1,920 (around EUR 1726.46);
      Only for beneficiaries who do not belong to the EU or EFTA: the FCS pays the compulsory health insurance of Switzerland;
    • There are no family allowances;
    • Fellows from outside of continental Europe receive a flight allowance (lump sum) for a return ticket to their country of origin (provided at the end of the program);
    • Special housing allowance of 300 CHF (around 269.75 euros) (paid once at the beginning of the program);
    • One-year half-rate public transport card;
    • Support services and various trips, dinners and tourist tours organized for scholars of excellence of the Swiss government.
    • Doctoral fellows may request a supplementary assignment for fieldwork. For field trips that last more than 2 months, the amount of the program will be reduced to 50%.
    • Postdoctoral Scholarships:

    The aid amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 3’500 (around 3147.19);
    Only for beneficiaries who do not belong to the EU or EFTA: the FCS pays the compulsory health insurance of Switzerland;
    There are no family allowances;
    Fellows from outside of continental Europe receive a flight allowance (lump sum) for a return ticket to their country of origin (provided at the end of the program);
    CHF 300 special (around 269.75 euros);
    housing allowance (paid once at the beginning of the program);

    Application Process:

    • The application package can be obtained by email from the Swiss Embassy. Send 3 sets (= 1 original + 2 copies) of the application documents in the exact order detailed below: The first set contains the original signed documents plus confidential letters of recommendation and, if applicable, certified translations. The other two sets are copies of the first set, except confidential letters of recommendation (only the first set).
    • FCS signed application form (written and printed) with photo.
    • full CV with a list of academic publications.
    • A motivation letter (max. 2 pages).
    • A complete research proposal (max. 5 pages, signed), using exclusively the FCS research proposal form.
    • A copy of the letter from an academic host professor (including his short curriculum vitae) at the Swiss university chosen confirming why he is willing to supervise and support the doctoral thesis.
    • For doctorates in doctoral schools *: A proof that the applicant is being considered for admission. Except: EPFL: Accepted admission is required.
      * A letter of support from a host teacher is required in any case additionally.
    • Two confidential letters of recommendation from two different professors in the applicant’s field (use only the FCS reference form: originals in sealed envelopes only for the first set).
      Photocopies of certificates and report cards of universities / colleges you attended previously and diplomas with qualifications, starting with the most recent. If it is not in English, French, Italian or
    • German with certified certified translations.
    • Signed medical certificate (use only the FCS health certificate form).
    • Two copies of the applicant’s passport (main page with personal data). Citizens with dual nationality add copies of both passports.
    • Do not place documents in plastic folders or folders.
      The application deadlines vary according to the country of origin.
