These challenges include poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Therefore, there is a need for the United Nations SDG program for young leaders in 2020.
Young Leaders for the SDGs support one or more of the following initiatives:
- Advocate for the Objectives, in the most accessible and relatable way for young people in different contexts;
Promote innovative ways to involve their audiences and colleagues in the promotion and achievement of the Objectives; - Contribute to the confidence of the brains of the young leaders who support the United Nations and its partners for key moments and initiatives related to the Objectives.
- Every two years, 17 new young leaders are selected through an open call for applications and a rigorous evaluation process. Candidates are qualified in aspects such as the ability to influence and motivate others, innovative nature, and storytelling skills. His work is evaluated based on scalability, impact, achievement, influence, and integrity. A high-level selection committee composed of leaders of the United Nations, governments, civil society, and the private sector conducts a final review of the main candidates.
After their mandate, the Young Leaders for the SDGs remain involved in the Initiative as students and collaborate and are mentors of the current Young Leaders class.
The Young Leaders Initiative is promoted by the Office of the Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Youth, in collaboration with its partners. The Initiative is part of the Global Youth Alliance for Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015 and located in the Office of the Envoy.
