Getty ACL Postdoctoral Fellowships in the USA are open for postdoctoral scholars. Fully funded fellowships are open for scholars worldwide related to History and Arts. These international fellowships aid early career scholars worldwide in undertaking sustained research or writing for projects that will contribute to understanding the arts and its history.

Getty Fellowships fund projects regardless of their development phases. However, international fellowships do not fund textbooks, creative work, pedagogical projects, etc. Scholars will receive a stipend for research and travel throughout the fellowship duration. As the fellowship is a portable fellowship, the scholars can receive grants for any suitable site for the proposed work.

Getty and the ACL (American Council of Learned Societies) aim to promote diversity and want the reviewers to take equity, diversity, and inclusion as important considerations. Scholars having excellent and promising ideas are encouraged and preferred so that they bring background and perspectives that are unrepresented historically as far as art history is concerned.

    Eligibility Criteria :

    The eligibility criteria for Getty/ACL Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023-24 are as follow:

    • Candidates must fill out the application in English.
    • Candidates with PhD degrees from 1 September 2017 to 31 December 2021 are eligible to apply.
    • Furthermore, they must have PhD degrees in the humanistic field are eligible to apply as long as they show that their research was based on methods, findings, or/and art history materials.
    • Scholars from all around the world can apply regardless of their citizenship, employment, etc.

    Requirements for Getty Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023-24

    • Two reference letters
    • Optional: three pages of images or other supporting materials (non-text) with the proposal. For every image, there must be a photo or image credit or citation along with a one or two-sentence explanation of why they chose the image.
    • A short personal statement of up to one page (Times New Roman, 11-font size, double-spaced).
    • Project bibliography of a maximum of two pages (Times New Roman, 11-font size, double-spaced).
    • Sample of maximum 15 pages including images and citations (endnotes and footnotes). It can be a representative excerpt from a journal article or book. The sample must be in English (Times New Roman, 11 font size, double spaced). If the sample does not conform to the criteria, it will be considered ineligible.

    Application Process:

    The application process for Postdoctoral Fellowships is online and includes the following:

    • Fill out the application form for Getty Fellowship carefully.
    • Provide a project proposal of a maximum of 10 pages (Times New Roman, 11 font size). Make sure to include the following subsections in the proposal:
    1. Project Description: It should incorporate the summary of the current development stages of the project based on the theoretical framework, scholarly literature, and significance.
    2. Project Work plan: It should incorporate the description of study accomplishment during the period of the fellowship, the material and methodological approach/approaches used. In addition, candidates must provide a rationale.
    3. Expected Products: e.g. journal article, book, digital project, etc.
