Here is the great opportunity for medical students and doctors Commonwealth Medical Fellowships The Commonwealth Medical Scholarships are for mid-career academic medical staff from low- and middle-income countries to improve their clinical skills. Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), the Commonwealth Medical Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable development. The CSC awards about 750 scholarships and fellowships for graduate study and professional development to Commonwealth citizens each year.

The CSC Secretariat is provided by the Association of Commonwealth Universities, based in London; Services abroad are provided by the British Council.

    Eligibility Criteria :

    The applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements:

    • Be a citizen of an eligible Commonwealth country or have been granted refugee status, or be a British protected person
    • Have qualified as a doctor before October 1, 2005
    • Have qualified in a medical school recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools
    • Have met the English language requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC) by August 2020
    • Have independently verified their primary medical qualification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for registration by the General Medical Council (GMC) before August 31, 2020
    • Be a permanent resident in an eligible Commonwealth country Eligible Commonwealth country

    Benefits :

    Each scholarship offers:

    • Approved airfare from the applicant’s home country to the UK and return at the end of their award (CSC will not reimburse the cost of fees for dependents, nor generally the cost of travel made before the final confirmation is award)
    • Research support grant, payable to the host university hospital
    • Stipend (life allowance) at the rate of £ 1,696 per month, or £ 2,104 per month for those in university hospitals in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at the 2019-2020 levels)
    • Refund of fee for a single English language exam and fee for registration of the General Medical Council (GMC)
    • Warm clothing allowance.
    • Study the travel grant to cover approved travel costs within the UK
    • If the applicant is widowed, divorced, or a single parent, the child allowance of £ 466 per month for the first child, and £ 114 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if he / she is accompanied by his / her children and live with them at the same address in the UK.
    • If you declare a disability, you will be offered a full assessment of your needs and eligibility for additional financial support.

    Commonwealth medical scholarships are offered under the second of six CSC themes:

    • Science and technology for development.
    • Strengthening health systems and capacity (the fellowship will develop clinical skills that will improve health provision or outcomes for disadvantaged groups in low and middle income countries. The beneficiary is expected to disseminate the skills and knowledge acquired upon return to home).
    • Promoting global prosperity
    • Strengthening world peace, security and governance.
    • Strengthening resilience and crisis response.
    • Access, inclusion and opportunity.

    Evaluation criteria

    Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:

    • Academic merit of the candidate
    • Quality of the proposal (minimum 200 words)
    • The potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s country of origin
    • The scholarships will develop clinical skills that will improve health provision or outcomes for disadvantaged groups in low- and middle-income countries. The beneficiary is expected to disseminate the skills and knowledge acquired upon returning home.

    Medical scholarships are intended to provide access to specific skills / experience that are not easily obtained in the applicant’s home country. Applications that clearly demonstrate this will be viewed favorably.

    The awards are sustainable for a period of 4-6 months at any approved UK university hospital.

    Application Process:

    • One must submit their application directly to the CSC using the CSC online application system. The request must be submitted and approved by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for which you have the academic appointment. The CSC will not accept any application that is not submitted through the CSC’s online application system.
    • Only one application per applicant will be accepted for these scholarships.
    • Supporting Documentation: You must provide the following supporting documentation by 4:00 PM (BST) on April 14, 2020 in order for the application to be eligible for consideration:
    • Proof of citizenship or refugee status; a copy of your valid passport (or national identification card) showing your photograph, date of birth and country of citizenship, uploaded in the online application system
    • Complete college transcripts and certificates detailing the qualification dates for your primary medical degree – uploaded to the online application system
    • Academic reference from the Head of the Teaching Hospital Department that describes how the acquired skills are required. All references must be submitted directly by the referees to the online application system (the referees will receive an application by email)
    • An endorsement from the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in which you have the academic appointment that confirms your academic appointment sent directly by the Dean to the online application system (an application will be sent by email to the Dean)
    • Statement of Support from Your Proposed First Choice Supervisor at UK University Hospital – Submitted Directly to CSC (Request to Email Supervisors)
    • The CSC will not accept supporting documents
