The Commonwealth Medical Fellowships is the fully funded opportunity for the   mid-career medical personnel from low- and middle-income countries to improve their clinical skills.

Funded by the Department of International Development of the United Kingdom (DFID), Commonwealth Medical Fellowships allows talented and motivated people to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable development.

    Eligibility Criteria :

    To apply for these Commonwealth Medical Scholarships, the applicant must:

    • Be a citizen of an eligible Commonwealth country or have received refugee status, or be a British protected person
    • Be a permanent resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
    • Have an academic appointment in an eligible Commonwealth country in one of the medical schools administered by the World Directory of Medical
    • Schools used by a hospital affiliated to the School of Medicine where the academic appointment takes place
    • Be available to start the scholarship in the United Kingdom in January 2020
    • Have qualified as a doctor before October 1, 2004.
    • Have qualified in a medical school recognized by the World Directory of Medical Schools
    • Have met the English requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC) within 2 months after notification that you have been tentatively selected for a prize.
    • The selected applicant is expected to participate in the clinical practice during the fellowship and enroll in the General Medical Council (GMC). If your proposed program does not require this registration, your application will be considered ineligible.

    Benefits :

    Each fellowship provides:

    • Air ticket approved from the country of origin of the applicant to the United Kingdom and returned at the end of the prize (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of the fees for the dependents, nor generally the cost of the trips made before the award is confirmed)
    • Research support grant, payable to the host university hospital.
    • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £ 1,656 per month, or £ 2,055 per month for those in university hospitals in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at the 2018-2019 levels)
    • Reimbursement of the fee for a single English test and the registration fee in the General Medical Council (GMC)
      Warm clothing
    • Scholarships for study studies to cover approved travel expenses within the United Kingdom.
    • If the applicant is a widowed, divorced or single parent, a child allowance of £ 466 per month for the first child, and £ 114 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if accompanied by their children and them they live with them at the same address in the United Kingdom.

    Purpose: To offer middle-career physicians the opportunity to improve their clinical skills and have catalytic effects in their workplaces.

    Intended beneficiaries: middle-career doctors working in teaching hospitals affiliated with universities in low and middle-income countries of the Commonwealth.

     

     

    These scholarships are offered under one of the six themes of the CSC:

    • Science and technology for development.
    • Strengthening health systems and capacity.
    • Promoting global prosperity
    • Strengthening world peace, security and governance.
    • Strengthening resilience and response to crises.
    • Access, inclusion and opportunity.
    • Scholarships will develop clinical skills that will improve health provision or outcomes for disadvantaged groups in low and middle income countries.
    • The beneficiary is expected to disclose the skills and knowledge acquired upon returning home.

    Medical scholarships are intended to provide access to specific skills / knowledge that are not easily obtained in the applicant’s country of origin. Applications that clearly demonstrate this will be considered favorably.

    The awards are sustainable for a period of 4 to 6 months in any approved university hospital in the United Kingdom.

    Application Process:

    One must submit his application directly to the CSC using the CSC online application system. The request must be presented and supported by the Dean of the School of Medicine in which he has the academic appointment. The CSC will not accept any application that is not sent through the CSC online application system.
    Only one application per applicant for these scholarships will be accepted.
    Deadline for supporting documentation: the applicant must submit the following supporting documentation by 4:00 p.m. (BST) on May 28, 2019 in order for their application to be eligible for consideration:
    Copy of your valid passport (or national identification card) showing your photograph, date of birth and country of citizenship, uploaded into the online application system
    Complete transcripts of the university and certificates detailing the qualification dates for the applicant’s primary physician title, uploaded into the online application system
    Academic reference of the Director of the Teaching Hospital Department that describes how the acquired skills are required. All references must be sent directly by the arbitrators to the online application system (a request will be sent to them by email)
    Approval by the Dean of the School of Medicine in which he / she has the academic appointment that confirms his / her academic appointment submitted directly by the Dean to the online application system (the Dean will be sent an application by email)
    Declaration of support from a proposed supervisor at the university hospital in the United Kingdom: sent directly to the CSC (a request will be sent by email to the supervisors)
    In the application, the applicant is expected to obtain the agreement of a UK Supervisor (Medical Consultant) of a university hospital in the United Kingdom that he considers most appropriate to present the scholarship and explain his reasons. The applicant must also provide evidence of agreement to receive the scholarship from their chosen university hospital. Candidates who select institutions outside of London will have priority over candidates who select institutions in London. This is because they are likely to gain more hands-on experience in institutions outside of London. The CSC will make the final decision about the study institution and reserves the right to cancel any preference indicated by the candidate.
