TWAS-SISSA-Lincei Research Fellowship

Opportunities Circle is here with a research fellowship. TWAS-SISSA-Lincei Research Fellowship is open now! It is an excellent opportunity for young scientists from least developed countries to pursue research in Europe. The international fellowship allows young researchers and scientists to visit research laboratories at the Centre of Excellence in Trieste, Italy, to carry out collaborative research projects in the fields relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Candidates holding an MSc or higher degree can apply for this fully funded fellowship.

The duration of this research fellowship in Italy is three months. Research proposals must be related to sustainability science and relevant to the fields offered. Candidates can check the eligible fields and projects on the official website; the link is provided at the end of this article. This exchange fellowship aims to improve the research capacity of talented scientists, especially those in the initial phase of their research career, and to encourage the growth of research connections for additional collaboration.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation is collaborating with UNESCO-TWAS. The UNESCO Fellowship will cover travel expenses and provide subsistence accommodation costs. The administration and financial operation of TWAS are under UNESCO after an agreement is signed between the two organizations.     Here are the eligibility criteria for the TWAS-SISSA-Lincei Research Fellowship:

    • Candidates must be under the age of 40 by December 2022.
    • Candidates must hold an MSc or higher degree.
    • They must be citizens of a least developed country.
    • Must maintain a research position in the least developed country.
    • Research projects that are relevant to sustainability science are preferred.
    • Female scientists are encouraged to apply.
    • Candidates already on site in the host country are ineligible.
    • Applications in the scientific fields listed in the application form will be considered.

    Required documents 

    • Completed application form
    • A copy of the passport (even if expired)
    • A curriculum vitae
    • A statement displaying scientific interests and plans for research in sustainability sciences in the home country indicating specifically which SDGs contributions are expected to be achieved;
    • A complete list of publications (do not enclose reprints of articles).
    • A copy of an MSc or higher degree certificate.
    • An invitation letter from one of the acceptable host laboratories mentioned above should include the anticipated duration of the visit (3 months) and make mention of the proposed collaboration. It should be apparent that candidates and proposed host are in contact for the scientific work and the conditions for conducting the work have been agreed upon regarding the timing of the visit and the available facilities.
    • Two referees must submit the letters of recommendation separately.

    • The Selection Committee grants fellowships based on scientific merit.
    • Applicants should apply the English language.
    • Interested candidates must submit the complete application form duly signed and send it to the TWAS Secretariat.
    • Candidates can send applications by email as long as pages with signatures are sent as scanned documents.
    • Incomplete/unsigned Applications are not acceptable.
    • In addition, there should be an agreement to obtain an acceptance letter from the possible host supervisor.
    • You should fill in the form, including all required documentation, and email your application to [email protected].
