The challenge aims to identify new and innovative design solutions that fulfill the role of today’s retail single-use plastic bag, providing ease and convenience for consumers as they strive to lessen their impact on the environment. The Challenge is part of the Beyond the Bag initiative, a global initiative launched by the Closed Loop Partners Center for Circular Economy with founding partners CVS Health, Target, and Walmart. Kroger joins as Senior Grocery Partner and Walgreens as Supporting Partner, along with Conservation International and Ocean Conservancy as Environmental Advisory Partners. OpenIDEO is the innovation partner of the consortium.

    Here are some eligibility criteria for the OpenIDEO Beyond the Bag Challenge 2020

    • Individuals, teams of individuals, and legal entities from all countries and territories are welcome and encourage to participate.
    • Solutions may include Reusable Models, Bagless Solutions, Innovative Materials.
    • Solutions must transport goods from retailers to final destinations while replacing the single-use plastic retail bag with an improved solution.
    • Also, solutions may explore point of sale checkout, in-store pickup, local delivery from the retailer, or other key moments along the “retailer to destination” journey.

    Mid-Stage Innovator Award – Growth Stage Concepts – Up to $ 100k USD
    Advanced Solutions Award: Established companies with innovative solutions will be considered for financial and in-kind support for testing and piloting.

    • Participants must apply for the photo and video competition online.
    • Submissions via email will NOT be accepted.
    • In addition, the photo captions must be in English or French Language.
    • Video Submission:
    1. It must be an original video.
    2. It must be one minute long.
    3. Must be in English or French Language, without any background noise or music.
    4. The camera must be in a fixed position to avoid a shaky video.
    5. The videos must not be altered beyond standard optimization.
    6. Re-check your audio quality before submission.
    • Photo Submission:
    1. A maximum of 3 pictures can be submitted, could be presented as a montage as well.
    2. Mention key messages in your submission for details in writing.
    3. Photos must not be altered beyond standard optimization.
    4. Pictures must be your original content and not be picked from somewhere; otherwise, the participants will be disqualified.
