Applications are now open for an internship in the International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch 2019 in the United States.

The International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking second-year third-year interns for law students for the fall semester of 2019 in the New York office.

Ideally, the internship will be available for a minimum of 12 hours per week from September 2019 to December 2019. The intern will mainly focus on monitoring the developments of international law in specific country situations, conducting documentary investigations and writing documents on international justice issues. . The intern will gain knowledge from international tribunals and international justice mechanisms and develop skills in legal research, drafting and advocacy.

    Eligibility Criteria :

    Eligibility criteria for the International Justice Program is 

    • Enrollment in an accredited law program that awards degrees (be it an LLB, LLM, JD or another relevant law degree) during the validity of the internship;
    • A great interest in international criminal justice and a demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international affairs is highly desirable;
    • The relevant course is highly preferred;
    • Knowledge of French is an advantage; Y
    • Computer skills (for example, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet applications) are essential.

    Job/Internship Description :

    The primary duties of the inmates include:

    • Realization of legal investigations;
    • Analyze international law;
    • Review and document media reports on relevant topics;
    • Follow-up of developments in the International Criminal Court;
    • Conduct policy analysis of current developments in international justice;
    • Identify and understand key issues in international justice;
    • Compilation of the investigation of cases;
    • Drafting promotional style documents that will be used internally and as a fund for promotion projects;
    • Become familiar with the Rome Statute;
    • Developing greater attention to detail through footnotes and factual verification;
    • Present information convincingly in internal drafts; Y
    • Close monitoring and evaluation sessions to provide feedback and support.
    • The internships are unpaid and part time. However, students can obtain academic credits, since Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the operation of an international human rights organization, close supervision by
    • HRW staff, and interaction with other US organizations. and international. Students should consult with their individual academic institutions for the requirements.

    Students will also have the opportunity to attend conferences, training, professional development workshops and / or special events related to human rights, as well as the network with other interns, volunteers and HRW employees. As an HRW intern, students will take the skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional environment.
