The fully funded Hansen Summer Institute Leadership Program is an opportunity for international and American students to develop leadership skills and a better cultural understanding to help forge a more peaceful future. The fellows receive practical training in teamwork, public speaking, negotiation, mediation and joint work to solve international problems. Leadership training includes meeting with political and business leaders to learn real-world skills and how to implement these skills at home after the program. The program is located in San Diego, California, and is open to international and American undergraduate and master’s students between 20 and 25 years old.
The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting international program funded by a generous donation from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. Ten three-week institutes took place in San Diego, California, in July 2007 to 2019. This program has provided a unique leadership experience and a university-based international cooperation program.
A main objective of the program is to create an international community of young academics who will use their summer experience as a basis to create lasting friendships and gain a common practical understanding of a more peaceful future. The fellows receive practical training in teamwork, public speaking, negotiation, mediation and joint work to solve international problems. In addition, they learn to actively listen and seek common interests and build realistic cooperation bridges.
Classroom training complements local excursions to San Diego attractions, such as Sea World, the zoo, an Independence Day parade on July 4, and a harbor cruise. Members meet and greet academic, political and business leaders to refine their own ideas and skills as they learn about the “American way of life.” Students leave San Diego with a “leadership toolkit” that they can properly apply to their future challenges and efforts. The participants came from all corners of the world, made lifelong friendships and formed their future in a more positive direction.
