Are you a mid-career professional who is interested in rare books, Southeast Asian printing history, and heritage collections? Then the Chevening British Library Southeast Asian Fellowship 2027 in UK is a great opportunity for you. The Chevening British Library Southeast Asian Fellowship is co-funded by the British Library and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. This international fellowship in UK is hosted by the British Library and is open to professionals from Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand who have a strong interest in researching rare printed works.
The Chevening British Library Southeast Asian Fellowship 2027 will allow the selected fellow to undertake a research project on the British Library’s collection of early printed works in Cambodian, Lao, and Thai languages. The collection covers the period from around 1840 to 1950 and includes approximately 600 to 800 items. The fellow will review and assess these rare materials and provide metadata-style information in original scripts and Romanisation to support the creation of catalogue records.
During these fully funded Chevening fellowships, the fellow will work closely with the Henry Ginsburg Curator, Ms Jana Igunma, who is responsible for the collection of early printed materials. The fellow will also work with colleagues in the Southeast Asia section and the British Library’s Conservation Centre. The British Library holds the UK’s largest and most significant collection of Thai, Lao, and Khmer printed materials, with more than 10,000 books and ephemera and over 50 periodicals.
The Chevening British Library Southeast Asian Fellowship 2027 is a fully funded fellowship program. The UK fellowship provides living expenses, return economy airfare, an allowance package for fellowship-related activities, and up to £1,000 for approved project-related expenses. The fellow will spend 12 months at the British Library from September 2027 to September 2028. This fully funded fellowship in UK is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in rare book research, cataloguing, conservation, digitisation, and collection management while building international professional networks.
